Peacefully, at home and surrounded by family, Carol passed away on November 7, 2018, after bravely battling cancer for over a year. Carol was predeceased by Murray, her husband of 51 years, and her parents, June and Donald Johnson, of Winnipeg. She will forever be deeply missed by her two sons Michael and Daniel (Holly); her siblings Laurie, Rick, and Patti, as well as her cousins, nieces and nephews; Murray’s brothers and sisters; and by her many friends from all across Canada and beyond.

Carol was born April 30, 1945, in Winnipeg, where she spent most of her life. She grew up in Fort Garry and attended Vincent Massey Collegiate, enjoying her time as part of the cheerleading squad, and it was there that she met Murray, the love of her life. They both worked in Minaki during the summer months, where they shared plenty of unforgettable times and made lifelong friends. This was one of the places to which they always returned, and so many of the family’s dearest memories are inseparable from the landscape, the people, and the music that they shared there. Music was always one of Carol’s great passions: her impeccable taste spanned decades and included everything from Elvis to Bruce Springsteen to Maroon 5, and George Harrison to Paul Simon to Lady Gaga.

Carol and Murray both had strong ties to the west coast of Canada: they went to visit family frequently, and they had wonderful friends there who would open their home to the entire family for as long as they were able to stay. Carol was also a tennis fanatic, and could spot right away when someone was painting the lines. Murray and Carol were happy that they were able to see several of their all-time favourite players compete at the tournament in Indian Wells, and were able to share the experience with some of their closest friends. The family’s most cherished memories were summers together at their cottage at Victoria Beach, where they loved playing tennis or cheering from the stands, as well as watching birds and other wildlife, and spending long summer days on the sand with their children and all their dear friends. Carol and Murray’s back deck was always a popular spot for a visit or a beer/cooler on the way up from the beach. Carol could happily chat for hours on nearly any given subject, but she was able to listen every bit as well. It was that unique combination of qualities that prompted so many of her family and friends to turn to her day or night for advice, and she never hesitated to help anyone, no matter what the circumstances.

Murray and Carol were an example of true love to everyone around them, and although each of them could drive the other crazy at times, they literally could not live without one another.

In accordance with Carol’s wishes, a funeral will not be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Carol’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society would be very much appreciated by the family.

Mom, you will be missed by so many for years and years to come

But by none more than us, your two loving sons

A mother, best friend, a light in our life

And to our father, the greatest wife

You gave us more love than you ever knew

Your adoration when we were children, and respect as we grew

The world is such a better place because you were here

You will be in our hearts everyday, and always near

All the love in the world,

– Daniel and Michael
